Squash Champion appointed
Head Coach at Bridge of Allan club

Jane Martin, England’s former number one squash champion, has been appointed by Bridge of Allan Sports Club as its new resident squash coach. Jane has been given the remit of building on the club’s junior development programme but will also provide coaching sessions for anyone, young or old, who is interested in squash. Recent sponsorship provided by Bridge of Allan-based Graham’s Dairies and Sportsmatch has enabled the club to work on growing its junior development programme, with particular emphasis on highlighting squash and tennis to local youngsters.

Jane will be hosting an open day on October 14 and is encouraging people of all ages and abilities to come along and try out the club’s facilities. As well as Jane, three other qualified squash coaches will be available from 10.00am until 4.00pm to give expert advice and tips. The day will be organised into grouped age categories of 6-8 yrs (10am – 11am), 9-11 yrs (11am – 12noon), 12-14yrs (12noon – 1pm) and existing juniors from 2pm – 4pm. Graham’s has also provided the club with a batch of junior squash rackets for use by participants at the open day.

Jane, aged 34, who was a professional squash player for 10 years before retiring seven years ago, was formerly head coach at the esteemed Northumberland Club in Newcastle. At her peak in 1996, she was ranked as England’s number one squash player and sixth in the world. She is credited with raising Northumberland Club’s squash coaching attendance to over 150 participants per week within 2 years.

Jane Martin commented: “My appointment highlights the club’s commitment to its junior development programme, which is set on delivering additional squash and tennis coaching sessions for youngsters. I’m looking forward to helping to develop the game within the local community as well as welcoming more people, young and old, to participate in squash at the club.” Club president, David Callander, said: “Jane’s appointment is an incredible asset for the club and her prestigious background ensures local squash enthusiasts, young or old, will receive the very best in coaching. Jane will also offer individual coaching sessions for adults who wish to brush up on their game, or to simply learn a new sport. We’re delighted to have such a prestigious player and coach on board at the club.”

Carol Graham, marketing manager, Graham’s Dairies, said: “As a company, we like to support local initiatives, particularly those which make a difference to children and families in the local area. I’ve been a member of Bridge of Allan Sports Club since a junior and I know how important it is to receive good coaching. I believe Jane’s appointment is an excellent asset for the club and for the whole community.”
